Ambiguity Management in Natural Language Generation

چکیده

In natural language generation (NLG) it can be desirable to preserve some ambiguities rather than try to eliminate them. The question is, which ones are so liable to misinterpretation that they should be removed, and which can be allowed to remain. Our approach to the problem is to notify the user of an NLG system of ambiguities that might be present in generated text, and to advise him/her as to how serious these might be for readers of the text. The degree to which each ambiguity is considered serious is adjusted by the responses of users upon seeing instances of that ambiguity. The system learns from these interactions, and an ambiguity tolerance level is thereby established. The ultimate goal of this research is to build an adaptive ambiguity notification tool that incorporates these features and can be used with an NLG system.

Book Reviews: Reversible Grammar in Natural Language Processing

This is a collection of 15 revised and expanded papers from the 1991 Berkeley ACL workshop of the same title. Collectively, the contributions cover all the main theoretical and practical motivations for reversibility of grammars: increased accuracy of description gained; economy of development and maintenance effort; consistency of language use in translation or interface applications; and poss...

Towards a Probabilistic Version of Bidirectional OT Syntax and Semantics

This paper argues that a purely probabilistic version of bidirectional Optimality-Theoretic syntax and semantics (Blutner 2000, Zeevat 2000) can make some significant contributions to the computational processing of natural language. The ideas outlined in this paper apply to interpretation as well as generation, but particular attention will be given to the question how bidirectionality can be ...

The Role of Non-Ambiguous Words in Natural Language Disambiguation

This paper describes an unsupervised approach for natural language disambiguation, applicable to ambiguity problems where classes of equivalence can be defined over the set of words in a lexicon. Lexical knowledge is induced from non-ambiguous words via classes of equivalence, and enables the automatic generation of annotated corpora. The only requirements are a lexicon and a raw textual corpus...

La generacion de lenguaje natural: análisis del estado actual

Language is one of the highest cognitive skills developed by human beings and, therefore, one of the most complex tasks to be faced from the computational perspective. Human-computer communication processes imply two different degrees of difficulty depending on the nature of that communication. If the language used is oriented towards the domain of the machine, there is no place for ambiguity s...

Ambiguity, Underspecification and Discourse Interpretation

A formal analysis of ambiguity processing is a necessary prerequisite for the development of a theory of underspecification and discourse interpretation for NLP systems. The analysis presented here is based on a distinction between semantic ambiguity and perceived ambiguity. A sentence is semantically ambiguous if it has a multiplicity of interpretations; a form of underspecified representation...
